G. MEL COLMAN, B.S., F.B.I.N.A,

Orange County (Orlando), Florida Sheriff,
former Winter Park, Florida Police Chief,
Founder, Colman-Staly Agency
Mel Colman, founder of the Colman-Staly Agency, was
a third generation law enforcement officer and started
his law enforcement career with the St. Petersburg,
Florida police department achieving the rank of lieutenant.
He was appointed police chief for the City of Winter
Park and in 1971 was appointed Sheriff of Orange County
by Governor Rueben Askew. He graduated from Rollins
College with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice
and graduated with honors from the FBI National Academy.
While Sheriff of Orange County he was known as the
father of professional and modem law enforcement for
his progressiveness in a time that Orange County saw
phenomenal growth and the opening of Walt Disney World.
In 1981, after leaving the Office of Sheriff, he started
Mel Colman & Associates, which provided private
security guard service, private investigations, consulting
on security and police practice related issues, premise
liability and expert witness services. This company
later became the Colman-Staly Agency.
